More about Myleene Musically, Myleene is the most experienced in the band. There is a long tradition of music in the Klass family and Myleene began playing at an early age. In fact, she was learning music before she could read, and is now an accomplished pianist, violinist and harpist (her harp stands in the corner of the studio at the house). In her teens she was travelling from the family home in Norfolk to London each weekend to attend music school at the Guild Hall.
Academically, Myleene is also a high flyer. She turned down a place at Cambridge University, preferring to pursue a career in music, and landing a place instead at the Miss Saigon training school.
Subsequently, the Royal Academy of Music - ignoring the fact she had not done a degree course - took her on as a post graduate student.
It is an impressive background, but Myleene is modest. 'I have my certificate from the Royal Academy, but I won't be hanging it on the wall,' she says. 'It's how you use it afterwards that counts. There are many
talented musicians who haven't trained formally.'
Myleene believes all the right ingredients are there for the band to succeed. 'I have seen bands that can't sing, can't perform, don't get along. We have the determination, the talent, the personalities to
make it - and we're doing it for the right reasons.'
For Myleene, the music will always be the most important thing.' People can get so wrapped up in their stylist, their hair, their this and that, but at the end of the day you're trying to put a record out,' she says. 'Put me in a recording studio and I'm in my element. I don't care if I'm in the wrong trainers or whatever - it's the music that counts.'
It was never Myleene's intention to emerge as the organiser within the band, but somehow she is. She knows they must keep a diary and stick to a schedule. 'I never thought I'd be like this in a million years,' she says. 'I walk about with the diary under my arm.' She shakes her head. 'I'm turning into my Dad!' (He is a ship's captain and very organised.)
In the beginning, at least, they have chosen to survive without a manager, which means someone has to keep track of what they're doing and negotiate with stylists, lawyers, the record company, the Popstars production team, and others. That someone is usually Myleene. 'We've had to do things for ourselves and look at the bigger picture instead of just being chauffeured round, waiting for things to happen.'
All five have clear ideas about image, music, deals - and the direction they want to take. 'I'm not easily intimidated by meetings,' Myleene says. 'And a lot of our strength comes from our unity. I know we have the upper hand because we work as a five, we speak as a five, and people treat us as a five.'
Myleene loves the atmosphere in the house. 'It's a big house and we could all go off and have our space but we don't. We all crowd into the same room -you've seen that!'
On cue, Noel appears. 'Is this the Magna Carta you're doing or what? He says.
'It's War and Peace,' Myleene tells him.
'I think I've got SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder),' he says. 'I don't want to do anything today (it is 3p.m. and he still hasn't showered...)
'What's wrong with me? I'm sitting in a one-and-a-half-million-pound house listening to our tracks, done by top producers, waiting to be interviewed for our book, and I just want to sleep...!' He bursts out laughing. 'Reality check!' says Myleene. 'It is strange because we're living in a bubble here - not a bad bubble, but it's so weird when you leave it. Danny and I have both been home and it's so strange...'
Noel interrupts. 'Danny doesn't think it's as strange as you do...'
'you wait 'til you get back to Cardiff for Christmas - you'll see.' she grins. 'I can't wait to get home and just veg out. You know how people get all dressed up to eat their Christmas dinner? We all wear our pyjamas!' Noel says, 'I'll be in my new Christmas pants and socks.'
'I'll have new slippers and a dressing gown-'
'And my new jumper,' says Noel. 'That's before I tryout my new bubble bath.'
'I always get magnolia bubble bath,' Myleene says.
Noel frowns. 'Magnolia? Are you sure you're not mixing up your present with someone else's? Er, some older person...'
'My Dad makes me write to Santa or I don't get a present.'
Noel stares at her. 'That's strange, Myleene. That, is so freaky. I'm not speaking to you any more...' He backs out of the room. 'And get a move on!'
Myleene smiles. '1 told you no one's allowed in a room by themselves -not for more than a few minutes anyway!' she says.
